About The Author

W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) is widely considered one of the most influential African Americans before the Civil Rights movement. Born only six years after emancipation, he was active well into his nineties as a writer, critic and social scientist. Du Bois's contribution to African American civil rights included co-founding the Niagara Movement, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Pan-African Congress. Throughout his long life he remained black America's leading public intellectual, despite near-constant criticism of his social and political opinions.
