Black August is upon us – a month of celebrating and remembering Black freedom fighters who struggled and fought to defend Black lives against a racist and oppressive system. Conceived of in California’s San Quentin prison in August 1979, it has a fascinating history, and falls in the same month as many important events in the Black radical calendar, from the death of W.E.B. Du Bois, the Haitian Revolution, the foundation of the Underground Railroad and the Nat Turner Rebellion amongst many others. Pluto Press has published books on some of these topics, and on a host of Black radical comrades from across history. The list of books is below, and they are all 40% off until the end of August.
