2019 will mark the 6th anniversary of the assassination of 3 female Kurdish activists Sakine Cansiz, Leyla Soylemez and Fidan Dogan in Paris, France. Sakine Cansiz whose code name was ‘Sara’ co-founded the Kurdistan Freedom Movement (PKK) in 1974 and dedicated her life to it. In January 2013, the world stood still as Sakine Cansiz, one of the most important personalities of the Kurdish Freedom Movement, was killed, along with two of her comrades, short before she was due to be interviewed for this film, Hevi. Hevi, which translates to ‘Hope’ in Kurdish, explores the life, journey and struggles of Sakine Cansiz and other revolutionary Kurdish women in the cities of Berlin, Paris, Rotterdam, Istanbul, Ankara, Dersim, Diyarbakir and the headquarters of the PKK, the Qandil mountains.
