Afternoon launch event at The Pankhurst Centre
We are excited to host the launch of Katherine Connelly’s new book A Suffragette in America; Reflections on Prisoners, Pickets and Political Change.
This is an edition of Sylvia Pankhurst’s never-before-published writing on her visits to North America in 1911-1912. Unlike the standard suffragette tours which focused on courting progressive members of America’s social elite, Sylvia got more involved, meeting striking laundry workers in New York, visiting female prisoners in Philadelphia and Chicago and grappling with horrific racism in Nashville, Tennessee.
Come and meet the author and hear first hand about Sylvia’s experiences! Signed copies of the book will be available, with a percentage coming to support the Pankhurst Centre.
Katherine Connelly is a writer, historian and an expert of Sylvia Pankhurst. She is the author of the biography Sylvia Pankhurst: Sylvia Pankhurst: Suffragette, Socialist and Scourge of Empire (Pluto, 2013)
